Vitamin Z - Berger Zweigelt

April 5, 2010

berger_zweigeltWe just had the Bereger Zweigelt 2008 tonight, and were very excited to have tasted it again.  The unassuming 1 liter packaging, simple label, looking like a 40oz old style beer bottle, including a pop top, belies the quality of the juice inside.

Great peppery and bramble aspects on the nose and tongue, and I would swear I was getting some cassis at the end of the bottle.  Fruity and juicy, wrapped around a fine tannin and mineral structure through the bottle.  A very satisfying and flexible bottle of wine, that paired well with both a spicy chicken stir-fry on the first occasion, and a grilled strip steak the second.  I was so impressed I had to drop a quick email to the import folks at Skurnik Wines, and I got a very congenial and informative response from Leif Sunderhoff. He even gave me some tips on other zweigelt to look for.

I’ve been on a little mission to try as many cool climate reds (zweigelt, lemberger, st. Laurent) as I can, because I have this feeling that this particular style of wine is a reasonable and attainable target for our own local cold hardy reds.  Thanks again to Vermont Wine Merchants for bringing this in to the state, and to the Woodstock Farmer’s Market for putting it on the shelf.  Picked up another today, and am starting to think that a case may be in order…great zweigelt introduction for the uninitiated.
